Piano Pedagogy Bibliography: Discography

DISCOGRAPHY

Bach, Johann Sebastian. Preludes, Fughettas and Fugues. Glenn Gould, piano. Sony, 93016. (2003 -- reissue).
Contains the Six Little Preludes, as well as preludes and fugues from the Clavier-Büchlein for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and other shorter works. Gould's style is not always historically accurate, but his influence was enormous on those who play Bach on the piano, and students learning this music should hear Gould's interpretations.

--------------------------- Keyboard Works. Maria Tipo, piano. EMI Classics, 817452. (2007 -- reissue).
This very affordable two-disc set contains almost everything on the Gould recording above as well as the complete Goldberg Variations and the Italian Concerto. While some performances are extremely fast, the playing is beautiful, and is another version of what Bach can sound like on the piano.

----------------------------- 18 Short Preludes. Kim O'Reilly, piano. Alfred Masterwork Edition, 00-16790. (1998).
----------------------------- J.S. Bach: An Introduction to His Keyboard Music. Scott Price, piano. Alfred Masterwork Edition, 00-24456. (2006).
----------------------------- Selections from Anna Magdalena's Notebook. Valery Lloyd-Watts, piano. Alfred Masterwork Edition, 00-22523. (1998).
All three of these CDs contain beginning music by J.S. Bach that matches the scores edited by Willard Palmer. Palmer's editions are based on autographs, and all editorial markings are notated in lighter print. The tempos and ornamentation on these CDs are geared toward the student performer. Available singly or in sets paired with their scores.
----------------------------- Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. Nicholas McGegan, harpsichord and clavichord; Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, mezzo-soprano; David Bowles, cello. Harmonia Mundi, HCX3957042. (2001 -- reissue).
A very affordable Notebook not played on the piano, with somewhat restrained tempos, that allows students to hear a more historical version.

Bartók, Béla. Complete Solo Piano Music. György Sándor, piano. Vox, 3610. (2003 -- reissue).
As close as one can get to the "authorized version," and definitely the most affordable recording available to include all the solo piano works, especially ones teachers would need such as the early volumes of the Mikrokosmos and both volumes of For Children, Sz. 42.

Burgmüller, Johann Friedrich. 25 Progressive Pieces, Op. 100. Valery Lloyd-Watts, piano. Alfred Masterwork Edition, 00-16787. (2006).
Contains all of Op. 100, including the popular "Arabesque" and Ballade," and is based on the historically-informed edition of the work by Willard Palmer. Available as a CD alone or in combination with the printed music.

Chopin, Frederic. Polonaises. Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano. Decca, 00289-452-1672. (1996).
This two-CD set contains the complete polonaises, including those without opus number, which are some of the first Chopin works students play.
---------------------- Waltzes, 4 Scherzos, 26 Preludes. Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano. Decca, 00289-460-9912. (1999).
This two-CD set contains complete sets of works, including those without opus number, making it a good value for teachers of students beginning to learn Chopin.

Clementi, Muzio. Sonatinas, Opp. 36 and 38. June Chun, piano. Centaur, 2439. (1999).
Contains all the sonatinas from both Opp. 36 and 38. The playing is artistic and sprightly but not exceedingly fast.

Kuhlau, Friedrich. Piano Sonatas, Op. 59; Piano Sonatinas, Op. 20. Jenö Jandó, piano. Naxos, 8.570709. (2008).
----------------------- Piano Sonatinas, Opp. 55 and 88. Jenö Jandó, piano. Naxos, 8.570710. (2008).
Complete recordings of these works. Clear playing with tempos that are more restrained than other recordings.

Schumann, Robert. Album for the Young, Volumes 1 and 2. Jörg Demus, piano. Nuova Era, 7318. (1989).
Artistic playing, although some faster pieces are very fast. Affordable price for the complete work.

Suzuki, Shinichi, compiler. Suzuki Piano School, Volume 1. Haruko Kataoka, piano. Summy-Birchard, Inc., 0-87487-497-1. (1984).
This CD has the weight of authority, since Kataoka studied with Suzuki and was one of the first teachers of his method for piano. Each piece is played four times in succession here, which is a help for young students. The "Twinkle" variations are played with accompaniment at a fairly fast tempo. Kataoka has recorded books one through three of the series.
--------------------------------- Suzuki Piano School, Volumes 1 and 2. Valery Lloyd-Watts, piano. Summy-Birchard, Inc., 0-97487-896-9. (1996).
Contains all works in the first two Suzuki piano books on one CD performed by an expert on Suzuki piano teaching (see Studying Suzuki Piano). The playing is slower here on the "Twinkle" variations, and they are each played once, just as written, without accompaniment. Lloyd-Watts has recorded books one through seven of the series.
